In Response is a series of paintings that reflect my reaction to the uncertain times we have experienced recently. Fires, floods, a global pandemic and racial injustice, have sparked deep-seated traumas which I am still processing. The works’ surfaces rapture and swell while simultaneously contracting, representing the disruption we are enduring. The truth is, I am fatigued and strained by the events of recent times, and the work is a reflection of that. More importantly, to me, the surfaces represent the process of healing, demonstrating our ability to be resilient. As an artist, I retreat into a cocoon, the creative process nurtures me, and when I engage with my art practice, I become peaceful and hopeful for the future. In isolation, I can vent, release and more importantly breathe. Through my practise the trauma transfers from my body and onto the surface. The physicality of unconscious action, doing without overthinking, allowing the material to translate that which is profoundly felt is both the intention and outcome of these works.
