Grain of the Gesture is a collaboration between contemporary composer Cathy Milliken, violinist Henry Justo and media artist Kenneth Lambert.

Milliken’s composition set the first condition for the work. Its shifts in density and duration created a spatial sense of listening that shaped how I approached the visual field. Filming Henry in the studio revealed the subtle instability of his bowing, a complexity that resisted automated translation. My initial attempt to convert the thirty-four-minute score into data produced a visual system that repeated its own logic. It held little relation to the nuance of the composition or the physical presence of the performance. Moving to hand animation allowed the image to form through a slower, more attentive process. Photographic studies of Henry’s gestures became reference points, and the work grew through a loop of listening, drawing and recalibration where the digital and the embodied informed one another.

The resulting imagery behaves less like accompaniment and more like a terrain shaped by the score. Light moves within an infinite black, following the internal pressure of the composition rather than echoing its surface. In performance, the projection becomes a horizon Henry can play against, creating a dialogue between gesture and spatial light. In installation mode, the absence of the performer shifts attention toward the architecture of the sound itself. The viewer encounters a landscape built from the logic of the composition, where image and duration share the same pulse. The work invites a form of looking that is also a form of listening, and the environment emerges from that exchange.
